THE BEST BUDGET HEADPHONES

BEST BUDGET HEADPHONES, 2013 — INEXPENSIVE AND AFFORDABLE — A QUICK NOTE ABOUT HEADPHONES…

First, to understand what you’re getting as it relates to affordable, cheap, budget headphones versus high-priced headphones, you should understand how headphones work to truly find a bargain and not fall for the flash that some headphone makers add to otherwise wack sounding earphones…

WHY ARE SOME HEADPHONES CHEAPER THAN OTHERS IN THE FIRST PLACE?

This is the case as it is with every other product you might buy. Each pair of headsets is built from different materials. Some are made with cheap materials (unfortunately, most affordable and cheap budget headphones) and might be a little fragile and others might be made of stronger and more expensive materials. Some may be able to withstand a great deal of excessive force while others break the first time you sit on them. I’m not saying that you actually should sit on your headsets to test their quality but it is nice to have some that might actually survive for a long time.

SO WHAT MAKES SOME HEADPHONES BETTER THAN OTHERS?

Well, strictly speaking it is all about the frequency and the sound isolation (or noise cancellation). Especially when considering budget headphones that are under 100 dollars versus, say, the expensive “Beats by Dre” headphones. Sound isolation is the term used for – how much of the sound coming from outside the earphones actually reaches your ear. You will definitely want a pair that can tune it out. It doesn’t necessarily have to block it completely. But to the degree that that outside sound interferes with the sound you actually want to hear, you will find your enjoyment of the song directly affected. Keep this in mind when you’re looking for low budget headphones.

As to the frequency, the human ear can hear as low as 20 Hz and as high as 20,000 Hz but it is strongly recommended to get a pair of earphones that has a range from 10 Hz to 25,000 Hz. This is due to a number of reasons. First of all it gives the sound a better quality but it is also because that the ear is not the only thing in our heads that receives the sound waves. The jaw for example is responsible for a large part of the sounds we are able to hear and it can sometimes intercept frequencies that the ear can’t.

best-budget-headphones-sony-mdr-zx100At only $15, these Sony MDR-ZX100 headphones are high quality and durable. They even fold for easy storage. The interesting thing is, on the train to work I’ve (the author) seen just as many people with these headphones as the Beats By Dre earphones. I’d imagine it’s because of the affordability, the design, and the quality output. The frequency range is pretty good which gives you more of the sounds you’re looking for. The only drawback I can see with these headphones is that they don’t put out a loud enough sound if you’re one to blast your earphones to 10. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great, but I’ve pumped my volume to 10 with these bad boys and they don’t go as high as I would like. Now, that’s not a problem with iPods or iPhones as those devices leave plenty of room for volume.

PRODUCT DETAILS/FEATURES

Closed-type supra-aural headphones (great noise reduction)
High quality and powerful sound (though not “loud”)
Lightweight for maximum comfort

WHAT CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

It should be noted that the Sony MDR-ZX100 headphones are currently #5 in the headphone category on Amazon.com. That’s saying a lot as many people are snatching these headphones up at $15 a pop…

–CommonSenseless, reviewer:

“Here’s the truth. I am studying for the Florida Bar exam. Part of the studying requires me to hear extended hours of lecture.. and by extended I mean 3, 4 and 5 hours at a time with 10 min breaks. These headphones are comfy enough to do that. They are snug but so lightweight you can forget your wearing them. I also observe they reduce outside noise pretty well. Regarding the sound, it is clear. Sometimes it does sound the way something sounds from behind a closed door; a little distant- but not muffled. But, that could be me. So I rate 4 stars. “

BEST BUDGET HEADPHONES: VEHO VEP-003-360Z1 EARPHONES

best-budget-headphones-veho-vep-003-360Z1-earphonesVeho VEP-003-360Z1 360 Noise Isolating Stereo Earphones

**BEST IN-EAR HEADPHONES LIST** For only $9.95, I have managed to get these cool pair of Veho VEP-003-360Z1 360 Noise Isolating Stereo Earphones with Flat Flex Anti Tangle Cord. These in-ear stereo earphones don’t have a built-in microphone but it doesn’t matter since I’m just using these to listen to my favorite songs. I also like the fact that I can use these earphones on my tablet and smartphone. It actually fits anywhere since its standard 3.5mm nickel plated headphone jack is designed to be compatible with majority of today’s mobile devices. Plus, it is so comfortable to wear. It also comes with another two pairs of snug-fit super soft ear buds.

Other than this, I am also very pleased with the Veho VEP-003-360Z1 360’s anti-tangle cord. I have already used a lot of earphones but none of them were as hassle-free as Veho’s. You can literally put this anywhere and it doesn’t matter if it’s on top of your desk or inside your bag or purse. That’s because it won’t cause a mess and you don’t have to spend a lot of time untangling its messy cord. Moreover, the sound quality is superb. You can hear the music clearly without those annoying background noises plus the volume can be adjusted according to your preference.

The only downer to this earphone is that it doesn’t have a built-in volume control. So I don’t really recommend that you adjust your song’s volume while you’re in the middle of your exercise routine. That’s because you’d have to take your phone out of your pocket. Anyways, this is just a minor drawback but all-in-all, this earphone is good enough. Considering its very affordable price, you couldn’t really ask for more. Besides, it features a very modern design. It’s also very handy and you can take it anywhere you go.

BEST BUDGET HEADPHONES

best-budget-headphones-panasonic-rphje120kRPHJE120K EARBUDS — These cheap but decent headphones are really a gem – if you’re into in-ear headphones. The Panasonic RPHJE120K headphones boast a standard quality of sound and a #1 ranking on Amazon.com for headphones. The frequency range of 20hz – 20,000mhz means a good but not great sound experience for the listener (you!). As we’ve been saying, frequency range could mean the difference between hearing a cymbal in a great classical song and not hearing it. So, if that’s what you’re looking for, then these may not be for you. The JVC HA-FX3X Xtreme Xplosives might be a better bet for you. Also, the Panasonic RPHJE120K’s comes in various colors which, if you’re into color coordination, is a nice little touch. Finally, the RPHJE120K earphones are priced at only $7. Here are some info:

PRODUCT FEATURES

The Panasonic RPHJE120K earbud headphones, in short, are very reasonably priced with average quality sound (for in-ear headphones).

Color-matching for iPod Nano 5th Generation and other MP3 Players
Ergonomic design and fit for ideal fit
1 Year Limited Warranty, Parts and Labor

***.5 STARS

In the final analysis, we give the Panasonic RPHJE120K in-ear headphones 3.5 stars out of 5. The sound quality is good but not great. The comfort is above average. Nice touch with the color. Your basic, in-ear earphones.

WHAT CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

Overall pretty good reviews. These headphones serve their purpose. Here’s a customer review:

“Papa” Jim —

“I have a self appointed mission of finding inexpensive headphones that sound better than average. I have been on this quest for years as I am always never without my mp3 player or radio. I am rough on headphones and go through them fairly regularly. So I am always trying to find inexpensive headphones that sound better than my previous set…Immediately the Panasonic’s sounded impressive. I honestly preferred the cleaner sound of the Panasonic RP-HJE120, and the Ergo design was a plus, the fit was just so comfortable.

So there you have my layman’s evaluation….and my hands down recommendation for the Panasonic RP-HJE120 (I got the Blue, however, I very much doubt that your color choice will affect the sound).”

Audio-Technica-ATHM30-HeadphonesBEST BUDGET HEADPHONES - THE AUDIO TECHNICA ATH-M30 headphones are a durable and comfortable pair of headphones. If you don’t like to hear the outside world and like to be in your world of sound, these are good for this purpose. I’m not too fond of the frequency range (20hz-20khz), which means you’ll miss out on certain deep, rich sound. But most people find that that’s more than they need to enjoy what they’re listening to. The sound quality is solid with a great signal-to-noise ratio. What’s signal-to-noise- ratio? With noise being unwanted sound and signal being the sound you’re looking for when listening to music, these headphones give you more “music” than extraneous sound or air. A letter grade of a ‘B’ for the price (about 35 bucks).

SOME OF THE KEY FEATURES

  • Exceptional clarity and sound accuracy
  • High power handling for in-studio mixing
  • Circular, pointed design ensures superior sound isolation
  • Adjustable cushioned headband and lightweight design for maximum comfort
  • Cord has a convenient one-side exit
  • Gold-plated 1/8″ (3.5 mm) stereo connector with strain relief and professional screw-on 1/4″ (6.3 mm) adapter

The $50 price range is a great price and are one of the lowest priced under 100 dollars with such quality that we could find. Again, that also depends on your needs. Some people don’t require great sound, only enough sound to sound “good enough.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MORE THAN 3,000 REVIEWERS ON AMAZON.com SAYING?

R. Tenney,

My late headphones set the standard by which I judge all others. With a pair of titanium drivers, they had the best frequency response of any set of headphones I have ever used. There were two problems: they were open, and the cord was extremely thin and prone to breaking.

Enter the ATH-M30. With a thick cord entering on only one side and nearly impervious to wear and tear, closed ears eliminating much external noise, thick and soft padding that makes long duration listening comfortable, a padded head band, (everywhere that directly touches the head is padded… some serious points there) and constructed of hard plastic and metal that bends and doesn’t break. And of course sound quality and frequency response… the specs say 20Hz – 20 KHz, and while I haven’t tested the high end, the low end is beautiful and strong. If you watch a movie with these and a plane flies overhead, you are not alone if you take the headphones off to make sure one didn’t really fly overhead. Great signal-to-noise ratio and frequency response that makes the inadequacies of MP3s immediately apparent.

BUDGET HEADPHONES – KLIPSCH IMAGE S4 – WE REVIEW

Klipsch-Image-S4-HeadphonesFor 40 bucks, the Klipsch family of headphones are great. The Klipsch Image S4i, in particular… These particular headphones have excellent sound quality. Now again, I’ll sort of throw out there the bass-heavy vs. treble debate. This particular model has a heavier bass than, say, the Monster Mobile headphones we reviewed. So that being said, they’re great for the deep throbbing base you’ll find in club, reggae, and hip-hop. The “accuracy” with the sound is pretty good. Not up on the level of the high-end headphones where it sounds like you’re in the sound booth with the artists, but the Klipsh’s are more than adequate. There has been a glitch reported where the volume automatically adjusts without the aid of the listener. But perhaps that’s due to the positioning of the sound leveler. I like these earphones a lot.

GOOD FOR: R&B, COUNTRY, ALTERNATIVE

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REVIEWERS ON AMAZON.com SAYING?

S. Pugilist.,

I bought these to go with a shuffle to use while working out and I am very happy with them.

Sound quality: The sound quality is excellent for the money … they have a ton of bass which is perfect for what I am using them for. I own the Image X10s too which are superb but they are 3 times the price and don’t have the inline controls. The X10s sound quality is definitely superior, they’re more accurate and have much better separation but that’s just not necessary when I’m more focused on not passing out while running up the hills here in San Francisco. I find the Klipsch’s Image range to be pretty bassy in general so if you are listening to classical music or a lot of instrumental stuff at high bit-rates you will likely be happier with a set of Etymotic ER4Ps (very accurate with amazing separation) but if you’re listening to rock/hip-hop/dance etc. the Klipsch Image range are a great choice.

Build quality: Time will tell how well they hold up but they feel sturdier than the X10s and I have had those for 8 months … I’ve been pretty hard on them and have had no issues whatsoever.

MONSTER iSPORT LIVESTRONG IMMERSION IN-EAR HEADPHONES – REVIEW

MONSTER-ISPORT-LIVESTRONG-IMMERSION-IN-EAR-HEADPHONESThe Monster iSport Livestrong earphones are moderately priced in-ear headphones provide a surprising crisp, clean, clear sound. At nearly $60 they better! But the sound rivals “Beats by Dre” earphones (though not completely). If you like bass, the Monster iSport in-ear headphones does deliver, although the sound is skewed more towards “treble.” Personally, I like a bit more treble with just a kiss of bass, that way the singing isn’t drowned out. I think this was by design by the company, they wanted a bit more “shine” and not that deep, rich bass that some people expect. I’d say these headphones are geared towards the Pop, rock, and classical. The good thing about these sport headphones is that they’re can stand alone as headphones, or they are more than adequate for talking on your cell phone. The mic is clear and not “poppy.” One neat little thing is the fact that the magnetized buds clip together so that you can wear them as a necklace when you have to stop listening and handle some business. Overall, 4 stars, would be 5 if it had more of a treble/bass balance, but for me, that’s not a knock!

GOOD FOR: ALTERNATIVE ROCK, R&B

SOME OF THE KEY FEATURES

  • Sound-isolating eartips provide a secure, customized fit that will not shake out or sweat out
  • OmniTip™ swivels for ultimate comfort and better sound
  • Tough, durable, UV-protected, and sweat-proof for your most aggressive workout — indoors or out
  • Hands-free smartphone and mp3 player calling and music control
  • Every purchase of a iSport LiveSTRONG supports the great work of the Livestrong Foundation

$48 price point. And they support a good cause. These headphones are great for workouts, yet they provide quality sound at a quality price.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REVIEWERS ON AMAZON.com SAYING?

Eric M.,

The sound is better than the packaging! I would label them as bass heavy, but in a good way (at least if you enjoy bass). What I mean is the rest of the sound isn’t sacrificed for the bass. You have a nice full sound, with a heavy bass on top of it. I would think this is generally what people looking for sport headphones want, as when you’re working out/playing a game/etc you’re generally going to be listening to music with a driving beat. These would work fine listening to an orchestra, but they certainly wouldn’t be the best choice. Far as I’m concerned, the sound is phenomenal though.

The fit is also great (more on that below), and I’m able to leave them in for hours without discomfort. They’re light, so you don’t feel them weighing down on you, and they stay right where they’re supposed to without you having to constantly reach up and wriggle them back into place. Just pop them in and forget about them.

SOUL: LUDACRIS SL150BW HEADPHONES – REVIEW

SOUL-LUDACRIS-HEADPHONESBEST BUDGET HEADPHONES UNDER 100…DOLLARS – It’s our suspicion that with the success of “Beats By Dre” Headphones, Ludacris saw how headphones could be a real profit maker. But the thing about these headphones is they’re cheaper than the Beats headphone, but we contend that they’re nearly as good.

SOUL LUDACRIS SL150BW HEADPHONES

“Soul by Ludacris” Headphones truly rival “Beats by Dre” headphones. They boast ample base (though sound is not drowned out by them) and comfortable fit.

As the product description proclaims “Ready to take you from the DJ booth to the skyways with high performance sound, the SL150 is a sleek and comfortable option for any professional or avid music lover looking for a powerful and precise audio mix experience on the go.” Comfortable they are and they’re not bulky which makes the Soul Ludacris SL150BW headphones very portable.

SOME OF THE KEY FEATURES

  • Superb Bass, Clear Mids and Highs, Creates High-Precision Audio Balance
  • iPhone® Ready: Compatible with iPhone® 4G and 3GS, iPad® and iPod®
  • Compatible with Most Smartphones and Multimedia Devices with 1/8” (3.5mm) or 1/4“ Headphone Input Jack
  • Includes Straight Audio Cable with In-line Remote Control and Standard Straight Audio Cable
  • Full Ear Cup Ensures the Best and Most Comfortable Fit Every Time
  • Sleek Folding Design for Easy Storage
  • Tangle-Resistant Cable for Easy Cable
  • Gold-Plated Connector for Seamless Signal Transfer

These headphones are a good bet at $83 (down from $199!). The big thing is the deep bass without drowning out the mids so that you can hear those “little” sounds that makes listening to a song all the more special.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REVIEWERS ON AMAZON.com SAYING?

Bob W.,

I have these and the beats solo hd and there is obviously no competition right out of the box, they look cooler and are 10 times more comfortable after listening to them for a while it was also clear that the sound quality is much better although they do leak some sound as with the beats if your looking for a really great pair of headphones, at $200 each these are so much nicer than the beats.
